Bridgestone Americas, Inc. (BSAM) is seeking an attorney experienced in Employee Benefits and the Employee Retirement Income Security Act(ERISA) to fill a Senior Counsel position in the Company’s Law Department. This position will report to the General Counsel Labor & Employment and will provide critical legal support to our Human Resources-Total Rewards Team and Corporate Shared Services group.
The primary responsibilities of this position include:
Working with BSAM Human Resources on Benefits design and strategy
Working with BSAM Shared Services on Benefits compliance and administration
Supporting Vice President of Labor Relations in benefits matters involving manufacturing plants, including Union Contract negotiations
Monitoring legal developments to ensure compliance in all areas of Benefits law
Drafting and reviewing Benefit Plan language, monitoring Plan filings, and ensuring appropriate government reporting
Advising on Plan interpretation to respond to questions and claims
Managing ERISA litigation, including making decisions on litigation strategy and supervising outside counsel
Engaging outside benefits counsel in an effective and cost-effective manner
Advising on third-party Benefits matters such as QDROs
Advising on executive compensation issues
Managing internal Benefits claims/appeals and providing legal advice
Assessing legal risk and making recommendations to senior management
Partnering with Corporate Services group in Law Department to review vendor contracts in the Benefits area
Serving as counsel to the Benefits Appeals Board, Pension Investment Committee, and other committees as the need arises
J.D. from an accredited law school
License to practice law and in good standing in any U.S. state
A minimum of five years of professional law practice experience (law firm and/or in house) with primary focus in employee benefits, ERISA, and executive compensation
Demonstrated knowledge of, experience in, and interest in employee benefits
Excellent communication skills, oral and written, with the ability to synthesize complex legal issues to their essential elements
Demonstrated experience, comfort and confidence to interact and relate well within a legal department, and build trusting relationships with HR and the senior leadership of BSAM’s operating units and subsidiaries
The ability to work well in a team environment
The self-confidence to work autonomously
Demonstrated ability to analyze complex Benefits issues, measure legal risk, and communicate guidance to management
The ability to supervise and manage outside counsel
The ability to prioritize responsibilities, to work efficiently, to manage and to conclude, in a timely manner, many projects, issues, and cases
A measured sense of humor and diplomatic skills, each to be used appropriately
Experience with union facilities is a plus but not required
A team player and business partner who is open, communicative and committed to the overall success of the Company
